Travel Tip: Carinthia
Carinthia is Austria's southernmost province - a mountainous region. It is literally surrounded by the mountains Karnischen Tauern Karawanken, Gurktaler and the Alps and some other prominent faults.
But Carinthia's natural center is located in the Klagenfurt basin, open to all valleys. And its scenic character is determined far more by around two hundred lakes and ponds as the surrounding peaks. Thus the people are shaped: no hard mountaineers as in neighboring Tyrol, but often cheerful, often Mediterranean-spirited inhabitants of the valley.
The climate will contribute its part to make it appear charming this area than other mountain areas. The statistics show average climate values, as they are unique to the Alps. The open position to the south of Carinthia lets the sun shine freely - a sun, which here has been southern force. The wall of the Tauern Mountains in the north to protect the country from the cold and wet currents. And the proximity of the Adriatic Sea has a balancing effect on the weather.
This climate has meant that the Carinthian Lakes - considering its location in the mountains (Lake Millstätter 580 m, 930 m Weissensee) - are unusually warm.
